Rail engineering careers compared: signalling, permanent way, electrification and rolling stock

Rail engineering gets talked about as one career. It is four. A signalling technician wiring a relay room has almost nothing in common with a permanent way operative re-railing a sleeper at 2am, and neither has much in common with a rolling stock examiner working a depot shift. The pay differs, the qualifications differ, the amount of your life spent outdoors in the rain differs. This guide puts the four main disciplines side by side so you can see which one actually fits.

Salary figures are approximate and based on published pay scales and industry norms as of 2025–26. Rail pay is collectively bargained and moves in steps after settlements, not gradually. Check current agreements before making decisions based on these numbers. Employer ownership is shifting through the GBR transition into 2027, so parent-company structures may change.
Signalling and telecoms: the control layer
Signalling keeps trains from hitting each other. The work spans a wide band. At one end you have a trackside technician replacing a point machine or testing a track circuit in the middle of a possession. At the other, a design engineer in an office produces the wiring diagrams and control tables for a new junction. In between sit signallers working the box or control centre, project engineers managing renewals, and testers commissioning new systems.
The indoor/outdoor split is genuinely close to even, which makes S&T unusual among rail engineering disciplines. You can build a full career without spending every shift outdoors, but you will need PTS and time trackside early on. The IRSE licensing scheme is the backbone of progression. You work through licence categories tied to specific equipment types (relay interlocking, Solid State Interlocking, EBI Lock, ETCS, and so on). Night work concentrates in maintenance and project delivery, because you can only touch live signalling during possessions. Design, project management and control-room roles run more conventional hours.

Permanent way: the track itself
Permanent way is the most physically demanding of the four disciplines and the least forgiving of someone who imagined a desk job. The work is inspecting, maintaining and replacing rails, sleepers, ballast and switches. You do it outdoors, in all weather, usually at night, because that is when the line is closed.
A typical week for a track operative might involve three or four night shifts on a possession: tamping, re-railing, replacing a switch and crossing, or walking a section for visual inspection. Supervisors (COSS holders) manage the safe system of work on site. Engineers move into design, asset management or project delivery.
PTS is the non-negotiable entry ticket. You cannot set foot on the track without it, and you need a sponsor to get it. COSS (Controller of Site Safety) is the next step up if you want to run a gang. NVQ/SVQ qualifications in permanent way engineering come through apprenticeships or on-the-job assessment. The main employers are Network Rail (who own the infrastructure) and the large contracting firms that deliver maintenance and renewals under contract: Balfour Beatty, COLAS Rail, VolkerRail, Story Contracting and Amey among them.
The work is honest and the camaraderie on a night shift is real. But you will be cold, wet and tired more often than not, especially in the first five years. Nobody should go in pretending otherwise.

Electrification: keeping the power on
Electrification engineers maintain and install the systems that feed electricity to trains. On most of the network that means overhead line equipment (OHL): the masts, wires, registration arms and tensioning gear. On the Southern network and parts of Merseyside it means third rail. Either way, you are working with high voltages, often at height, almost always outdoors, and mostly at night.
The physical demands overlap with permanent way. You are on your feet, on the ballast, in the weather. The difference is the electrical component. OHL technicians need specific competence cards for the equipment they touch, plus working-at-height certification. Design and project engineers will typically hold an electrical engineering degree or HND and work towards chartered status.
Entry is through apprenticeships (SPL Powerlines and COLAS Rail run well-known schemes), through electrician crossover, or through graduate engineering programmes. An 18th Edition wiring qualification helps but is not always essential at entry.
Night work is heavy. OHL renewals happen during blockades and possessions, and fault response can pull you out at unsocial hours. Design and asset-management roles are more office-based.

Rolling stock: the trains themselves
Rolling stock engineering happens in depots and workshops. You maintain, examine, repair and overhaul the trains. The work is mechanical and electrical: brake systems, traction motors, door gear, bogies, air conditioning, software updates on modern units.
This is the most indoor of the four disciplines. A rolling stock technician at a depot like Bounds Green, Etches Park or Hitachi’s facilities at Donington works under a roof, on a pit or a platform, with proper lighting and (usually) a canteen. You will still do shift work because depots run around the clock, but the pattern is more predictable than possession-based track work. Weekends are less disrupted than in permanent way or OHL.
Entry is overwhelmingly through apprenticeships. The big train operators and the manufacturers (Alstom, Siemens, Hitachi Rail, Wabtec) all run schemes. You come out with an NVQ Level 3 in mechanical or electrical engineering and rolling-stock-specific competence sign-off. Some people enter at technician level from a general engineering or auto-mechanic background.
PTS is needed only if your role takes you trackside (shunting, depot movements near live track). Most depot-based work does not require it.
Progression runs from technician to senior technician, then into engineering or management tracks. Principal engineers and rolling stock managers sit at the top of the technical ladder.

Which one suits you
This matters more than people expect. Choosing the wrong discipline is the main reason people leave rail engineering inside two years.
You want a design desk and intellectual problem-solving. Signalling design or rolling stock design engineering. You will work in an office, use CAD and simulation tools, and deal with control logic or vehicle systems. You still need trackside or depot exposure early on, but the career bends toward a desk. S&T design and rolling stock engineering are the two paths here.
You want to be outdoors and you do not mind physical work. Permanent way or electrification. You will be fitter, tougher and more tired than your friends in offices. You will also earn decent money relatively quickly and the work is tangible in a way that office jobs rarely are. P-way is more straightforward physically. OHL adds the electrical and height elements.
You want hands-on work but with a roof over your head. Rolling stock. Depot work is skilled, varied, and you are not kneeling in ballast at 3am in February. The trade-off is shift work and less variety of location. You will know your depot very well after a few years.
You want structure, clear progression and a qualification framework. Signalling. The IRSE licensing scheme gives you a defined ladder. Each licence is a concrete milestone. If you like knowing exactly what you need to do next, this suits you.
You want the least night work. Rolling stock, then signalling design. Permanent way and electrification are the worst for nights, and no amount of positive framing changes that.
