About the role

East Midlands Railway (EMR) is looking for enthusiastic individuals to join the Nottingham team as Trainee Depot Drivers. As part of a successful and award-winning company, you will contribute to keeping people safe and delighting customers on the East Midlands Railway.

About the Role:

As a Depot Driver, you will be responsible for moving trains within the depots. Your duties will include depot driving, shunting, performing light maintenance, fault finding, and reporting. A key part of the role is ensuring the safety of everyone and maintaining the train environment to EMR's high standards. You will receive comprehensive training and must adhere to all East Midlands Railway rules and production requirements.

What We're Looking For:

Successful candidates will be responsible, committed, and possess excellent communication skills to work effectively within the team. While no previous qualifications are required, a GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent) in Maths and English is necessary for the apprenticeship qualification. Support can be provided to gain these if needed. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to apply, 17 years and 9 months old to start training, and 18 years old to qualify as a driver.

Working Hours and Location:

This is a full-time role requiring 37 hours per week. The shifts will predominantly be afternoons and night shifts, operating across 7 days a week. A minimum of 12 hours rest is mandated between shifts. It is essential that you live within a 60-minute travel time of the Nottingham depot.

Recruitment Process:

The recruitment process involves 5 stages:

  • Stage 1: Application submission and online Arctic Shores Assessment
  • Stage 2: Driver testing part 1
  • Stage 3: Assessment Day
  • Stage 4: Competency-based interview
  • Stage 5: Driver testing part 2

Successful candidates will be placed in a Talent Pool and offered a role as opportunities arise. Training courses will begin throughout 2027 and 2028. The apprenticeship scheme is a year-long qualification, with training conducted at the EMR Training Academy in Derby.
