About the role
We are seeking an experienced Commercial Growth Manager for a 9-month fixed-term contract to lead our commercial growth team. Your primary focus will be to drive sustainable revenue growth and implement transformational changes to rail ticketing to enhance customer confidence.
This senior commercial role is crucial to achieving Northern's ambition of increasing rail journeys by 30 million by 2030. You will oversee Product & Pricing, Revenue Management, and Sales activities, placing customer insight and demand at the core of commercial decisions and influencing change across the UK Rail industry.
What you’ll be doing
You will take full ownership of Northern’s Commercial Growth Plan, integrating strategies for Revenue Management, Product & Pricing, and Ancillary Revenue.
Collaborating with colleagues across Northern and the wider rail industry, you will:
- Support the development and execution of a commercial growth strategy that boosts revenue, journeys, and yield through optimized product and pricing decisions.
- Prioritize customers and data in commercial decision-making, using insights, demand data, and analytical evidence to shape strategies.
- Lead technical experts in Product & Pricing, Revenue Management, and Sales, fostering a high-performing culture and developing talent within these teams.
- Direct Northern’s commercial response to GBR fares reform, advocating for our interests in industry discussions and ensuring smooth implementation across the business.
- Cultivate robust relationships within the rail industry, including GBR, the Rail Delivery Group, and other train operators, to share best practices and introduce innovative ideas to Northern.
- Represent Northern at senior industry forums and commercial working groups, influencing decisions and championing the interests of both customers and the business.
What you’ll bring
We are looking for a commercially astute leader with strong commercial acumen, excellent relationship-building capabilities, and the ability to influence stakeholders and translate complex information into clear decisions.
You will need:
- Substantial experience leading a commercial function, preferably within the rail, aviation, hotels, car hire, or another demand-led industry.
- Strong commercial acumen, with a proven history of taking new growth ideas from conception to successful delivery.
- Advanced numerical and analytical skills, with the capacity to translate data and insights into actionable commercial decisions.
- Exceptional influencing and collaboration skills, with the confidence to engage with senior stakeholders both internally and externally.
- Experience in leading, developing, and mentoring teams.
- Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to simplify complex commercial or technical subjects.
- A proactive drive to challenge the status quo and implement insight-led improvements for customers.
- A degree-level qualification.
